god, not God

4 01 2009

English is very reflective of our culture. In fact, so reflective that grammar is sometimes thrown out the window for the sake of our cultural arrogance. Example: one well known mythological figure, Zeus, is referred to as “he.” Another well known mythological character, Yahweh, is referred to as “He,” simply because his myth is more popular among English speakers. “He” is not a proper noun, nor is “god.” His name is Yahweh, not God. He is a god, not the god. English is not an extension of Christianity, Judaism, or any other religion, and as such modifying grammar to fit their religion is, as a wise man is fond of saying, bullshit.

(Sorry for the lack of real posts the last week. I’ve been busy. I’ll try to get a few up this week)
